Journals Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Journals - Essay ExampleInitially, you would think about it as a direct encomium to the writers mistress considering the words being used nevertheless, it went unflatteringly to the mistress. Whats pleasing about the reading is how the visual aspect of the sonnet is complemented by the words and the Rhyme scheme used. Also, it is arouse how the writer referenced other poets in the past and used their work to parody its thoughtlessness and predictability. I am particularly drawn to the writers satire over the hyperbole of the allusions used in conventional poetries. The writers mock over these representations expresses his strong dissent on comparing 2 entities unfairly it is one-sided in a sense that one is being fooled or belied Students Last Name 2 (the mistress) and one remains stationary (the cancel entities) - not having to feel all these predictabilities because they be lifeless. This disagreement suggests that the writer feels its not fair to resemble ones affection with t hings that are beyond reality unsoundable notions. The reading taught me how to appreciate other people for who they are. Also, it taught me to become more realistic and al behaviors strive to evade disproving statements that may cause pain to nighone, especially those who are close to me. Journal debut 2 Daddy by Sylvia Plath (Chapter 19) Sylvia Plaths Daddy demonstrates a rather difficult and abstruse concept. She integrates her personal life with some historical, religious, and psychological themes. This rare combination created a piece of art that opens up for manifold interpretations. The poem depicts a story of a girl who suffers from the memory left(p) by her make who passed away. What is most interesting about the poem is its autobiographical tone. It relates to the personal life of Sylvia Path. There are passages of the story that suggest range of how his fathers memory affected her. In the poem it goes At twenty I tried to die. And get back, back, back to you. I thou ght even the study would do. It shows how desperate she is to be with her fathers company once again. The poem also includes the life she had with her husband. She describes her husband as a vampire someone who destroy her life. She writes if Ive killed one man, Ive killed two- The vampire who said he was you and drank my blood for a year. Probably, the most telling part of the poem is how it goes consistently with her life, which asserts the autobiographical tone of the piece. Journal Entry 3 Metaphors by Sylvia Plath (Chapter 19) One particular reason why this reading is quite puzzling and difficult to decipher is the Students Last Name 3 detail that it uses metaphors to indirectly and ambiguously make connection with its underlying meaning. Of course, given that most poems have unclear or implied context, it makes it more difficult to understand. The poem shows how cunning and complicated Sylvia Plaths poetry is. It prevents the ease of resorting to visual interpretations of t he mind to easily understand the poem. Even more, it uses metaphors that are uncommonly, unexpectedly relatable to the intended meaning of the poem. The poem depicts pregnancy. I love the way Sylvia presented her ideas by being more creative. There are

Strategic Considerations within the European Union Framework Essay

Strategic Considerations within the European Union Framework - Essay ExampleThis essay discusses that member states of European Union deport been pilling pressure to the union following debts and quoin crisis. Arguably, EU failed to offer protection to the interest of its members and their citizens thus leading lost of public support. Although it is not probable to get by that the turmoil has influenced the Europeans view to matters, other than its social influences, it may have influenced the engagement of European citizens to European projects. Strategic plans initiated by EU member states to counter the dissemble of the financial crisis, and the create employment is an indication of the impact of the economic crisis to the citizens of the Euro zone. A survey by Transatlantic crusade argues financial turmoil affected 60% of the people interviewed compared to 55% of people affected by the crisis in 2009. Europeans show a lot of concern to development as revealed by the Euro-bar ometer, which provides a behind of gauging the crisis. Many believe that issues of immigration, insecurity, and environment are fundamental as issues relating to socio-economic issues. In the spring of 2007, major concern for most Europeans is the economic situation and inflation in 2008. Interviews conducted in spring of 2009 indicated economic turmoil as the major headache of most Europeans. Arguing from the report, 42% of people interviewed quoted economic recession as a threat. Unemployment was another factor alongside economic turmoil. It is arguable that economic slump has an effect on rate of employment since recession dislodges most people by of employment. Further, social crisis report produced in autumn 2009 indicates that 51% of citizens interviewed indicated unemployment as the major factor, which was ahead of insecurity by 19%, inflation by 19%, and health care by 14% respectively (Thierry, 2011132). The above figures do not show the magnitude of the effects in a nati onal scale in scathe of social crisis. Apparently, many European nations argue that the economic nightmare has maimed their buying power. For instance, a study conducted by Smith & Grant (2003) and published in their book to evaluate the effects of the economic slump shows the following trend the Dutch claim 40% of its effects, Bulgarians feel 84%, Spanish 71%, and Romanians 89%. Euro-barometer flash survey indicates the significance of the effects of the economic crisis to the households in Europe. In addition, a look at the June 2010 survey results shows a big difference mingled with northern and southern Europe (UK, Sweden, German, Denmark, Luxembourg, Netherlands, and France), in which at least 15% of citizens claim to have had challenges in paying their bills including food, over the twelve months. The above note varies with report from Southern Europe (Portugal, Spain, and Italy), in which economic crisis trend takes 17-20%, and in the Eastern Europe in which the economic t urmoil takes 30% and (43% for Romania). It is arguable that the trend of economic nightmare in Europe takes the shape of social crisis (Thierry 2011134). This argument leads to the questions as to whether a political crisis is looming, which will lead to increased conception with take to the ability of the European Union to counter the crisis. In the recent past, observers still believe that euro is still a victor to the economic crisis. The observers argue that the joining of the European Union by the Icelandic countries is approve that euro could champion the crisis. Other observations are the determination by Baltic countries to introduce policies that would act to maintain a changeless rate of exchange using euro as a single currency. According to Ronald & Saskia (201143), it is apparent that Europe alongside other continents in the world suffered economic recession towards the end of 2008 and beginning of 2009. However, it managed to avoid devaluation witnessed during 1930 ec onomic turmoil. Largely, its

Such population demands effective discharge arrangements. Discharge planning is a facet of the overall care of the patient, developed through the application of the nursing process (Watts, 2005). It is a process that is dependent on inter-professional coaction between health and welfare professionals (Atwal, 2002). Study of problems of discharging patients from infirmarys have been in focus during the last two decades, and some of the shortcomings identified are poor communication between infirmary and community inadequate notice of discharge over-reliance in informed support and lack of support inattention to patients needs ahead leaving hospital and wasted or duplicated visits by community nurses (McKenna et al, 2000, p.594-601). Cost effective, coordinated, high-quality discharge planning is integral to control increasing healthcare costs and hospital personnel must become more adept at preparing patients for discharge as there is a decrease in length of acute hospital stay, and increase in care shift to communities and homes (Lalani & Gulzar, 2001). MANY TIMES NOVELS,MOVIES HAVE LIFE CHANGING EFFECTS ON THEIR Movie Review

MANY TIMES NOVELS,MOVIES HAVE LIFE CHANGING EFFECTS ON THEIR AUDIENCE.EXPLAIN HOW A SPECIFIC OR NOVEL HAS HAD A POSTIVE EFFECT ON YOUR LIFE - Movie Review ExampleUpon being released to video, and then later DVD, many stores refused to carry it for sale or rent, including Blockbuster and Walmart. It has been my experience that most people who hold an tone of this movie hold an opinion based upon the controversy it generated rather than the content of the film itself. Since this seems a less than progressive way to form an opinion, I decided to watch it and form an opinion based on what the movie seems to be about to me. The sustain Temptation of Christ has had a lasting effect upon my life not only for its content, but as a method of showing that misinformed public opinion can have a lasting and damaging effect upon works of art that extend into time and form. The protest against the film centers around the supposedly drab qualities it contains, including Jesus marrying and having c hildren. Indeed, the film does feature a section in which Jesus marries and has children. But far from being blasphemous, these scenes highlight Jesus sacred qualities because they take place in spite of appearance a vision-His last temptation on the cross. The point of the movie is that Jesus denies the temptation and accepts his mission as messiah. In other words, Jesus is heroic removed from being blasphemous, the film is actually quite conservative in its adherence to religious dogma.

Comparison of Marx and Weber on theory of Inequality Essay

Comparison of Marx and Weber on theory of Inequality - Essay ExampleThe contemporary debate on the theories of social inequality considers Marxs and Webers view, with the aim of conceptualizing class analysis. Wright (2001) emphasized the centrality of class within the Marxist tradition. Marx stated that class struggle is the motor of history, and supported an exploitation-centered concept of class. triple Marxist theses are essential in order to understand his perspective on social inequality (1) the radical egalitarianism thesis, according to which a radically egalitarian diffusion of the material conditions of aliveness would enhance human flourishing (2) historical possibility thesis, suggesting the feasibility of organizing parliamentary procedure for a radically egalitarian distribution of the material conditions of life, and (3) the anti-capitalism thesis. Marx considered capitalism as the enemy of social equality, since capitalism blocks the possibility of the radical ega litarianism.Breen (2001) outlined Webers view on social class, presented in Economy and Society. According to Weber, members of a class share common life chances, i.e. the chances that individuals have of procuring goods. Weber stated that the market distributes life chances in accordance with the various resources that individuals bring to it. There is no assumption in Weber that class will be the major source of conflict within capitalist society or that classes will necessarily serve as a source of collective action. Rather, the focus is on the market as the source of inequalities in life chances (Breen 2001 42). For Weber, classes are of interest insofar as they shape life chances. Weber identified four classes under capitalism the dominant entrepreneurial and propertied groups the flyspeck bourgeoisie workers with formal credentials (the middle class) and those who lack them and whose only asset is their labor power (the working class) (Breen 2001 42).I believe that

Luis Valdez Los Vendidos - Essay ExampleHe gained a lot of bring by carrying out performances in the fields and in the local community centers. Most of Valdez courses were short satires to inspire his audiences and create awareness among the workers and his audiences about favorable problems that plagued them. The lam expressed the feelings and sentiments of the workers and hinted at probable solutions that could be used to solve the problems and lead much better lives. Los Vendidos is one such gaming that attracted critical acclaim for express the opinions of the oppressed farm workers. This play had everything to do with stereotypes of the Anglo culture portraying the Chicano experience, because it not only depicted the atrocities meted out to the downtrodden Chicano workers but helped them to identify themselves with its characters. The stereotypes reflected in Valdezs play Los Vendidos included the farm workers, the Urban tough guys, revolutionary characters and the new Mex ican American yuppie. Unlike the regular stereotypes where people identify themselves with the same characters played in the cast or according to the prevalent popular culture in which they live Los Vendidos serves to oppose such tendencies by using new techniques of reflecting such stereotypes. In this play, Valdez depicts stereotypes as being artificial or something that has been culturally produced. The dramatist makes use of the play to address the idiocy of stereotypes that reflect the problems of the Chicano people that involve the falsities that are regularly accepted by the society in America. The primary ideology behind the actos was to encourage its audience to take social action and satirize the opposition (Valdez 12) the play also serves to point out the discrimination faced by the Chicano people in their daily lives by highlighting the blemishes and wrongdoings of the Americans. These stereotypes are exaggerated beyond similitude to lay strong emphasis on the importan ce of acknowledging them in society because they are looked upon as being second class citizens by the Americans who discount them from social circles. Los Vendidos by Valdez is one wherein the playwright has sought to highlight the stereotypes related to the Latino people living in America. The rejection of the secretary to each of the offered model Mexican, the farm worker, the urban model, the revolutionary and the America educated academic, reflects the prejudices and lack of understanding among the American population. The Mexicans are labeled in America and each of the four characters symbolizes the common labels. In doing so, the playwright allows the readers to analyze and understand the prejudices which they may be holding against the race. The Honest Sanchos Used Mexican Lot is the name employed by the dramatist to bodge in word play. It likens the Mexicans to objects. The success of Valdez play was also in making the Americans understand the gross ridiculousness of the w ay they treat the Chicano people. It helped in reflecting the misconstrued and wrong opioniated views on the stereotypes among the Mexican people through the deliberate attempt by Valdez in his portrayal of each different stereotype to drive home his message. By satirizing the American people, he successfully accomplishes the primary objective of making the Americans to think critically about their actions and treatment of the Mexican people. He attempts to make the American

A legal factor that impacts Tata motorsis the protection of customers and employees, like all businesses Tata has to keep to legal factors and laws, the need to parcel out all of their customers fairly and honestly, this helps customers feel they can trust the business as well as giving the a good reputation. Challenges that Tata face when selling their products are making sure they pass the sales of good act which means they need to describe the product exactly how it is and not say it does something it actually doesnt. It also needs to pass the customer credit act. http//www.business-standard.com/article/pti-stories/tata-motors-focus-on-customer-satisfaction-to-woo-back-buyers-114111600186_1.ht ml this article explains how they are going out of their way to make sure the give there customers the topper service they possibly can. The article states that Tata motor has previously had problems with their customer service. They have taken this feedback and actually work on making it better by upward(a) the quality of manufacture and repairs. How the business deal with social factorsA common social factor that affects business is equal rights for both man and female workers and messs religion. This could impact Tescos as if anyone feels as though they are being judged or unable to do something because of these reasons then they could cause problems for Tescos by making complaints both to their managers or their union. To make sure this doesnt happen Tescos has to make sure that their staff know that everyone treated the same and if there are people applying for a job they cannot turn them away because of these reason, the only way they can do this is if someone is disabled i n some way and their disability would occlusive them from doing the job required, however if this is the care they have to inform this person that is the reason but in a kind way as not to profane them.Tescos deal with these possible problem by getting new applicants to have a cv which is what they are judged upon or the job, they then have interrogate/trial which is so that they are then judged upon their abilities to do the job not on the gender or religious suck up. Tescos has coped well with this issues as if you are to go into their stores you are clearly able to see a balanced level of both male and female staff, Tescos also considers the religious view and has there store open later and close early on a Sunday as most religions see this a day of rest.

Belonging Definition Essay Example for Free

Belonging Definition EssayWhen an individuals beliefs or values are contradicted by that of their society, they must look at a choice as to whether belonging to themselves or to the group is more important. Miller explores the reactions of many characters to this dilemma, in particular Reverend Hale. Initially Hale is potently respected and attached to the town, being described as an expert. He uses the metaphor of Theology sir, is a fortress no crack in a fortress can be accounted small, to indicate his strong belief in the value of a theocratic society. Hale struggles to come to terms with the failings of this body as indicated by the juxtaposition of Millers stage direction Hale in a fever of guilt and uncertainty with his words Proctor, the philander is just. This demonstrates that he was non able to instantly relinquish his connection to the Salem community, despite the moral ramifications. He loses all sense of self-respect as he encourages Proctor to give his lie, w hich directly contradicts one of the Ten Commandments reiterated throughout the play Thou shalt not bear false witness. The decline of both Hales connection to the community and to God is clearly demonstrated by the contrast of Hales joyful analogy of his cause self I came into this village like a bridegroom to his beloved, bearing gifts of high religion, with his new perception of his role, I come to do the bewilders work. Thus by examining the character of Reverend Hale one can see how the value an individual places on being respected and connected to others and how this affects their integrity and perception of self. Whilst The crucible presents an extreme contradiction between the values of the individual and their society, Woolfs novel explores the alliance between the two in a less polarised way. The title character, Clarissa Dalloway, is depicted as a British socialite preparing to throw yet another party. Her husband Richards comment that she did it genuinely it was a nat ural instinct is later contrasted with her comment that Every time she gave a party she had this feeling of being something not herself. The novel is permeated by her questioning whether this socially acceptable lifestyle was worth the lack of fulfilment and identity associated with it. This is demonstrated by her choice to marry the upper class, yet impassionate, Richard instead of consummating her relationship with Peter. yet there were both social and own(prenominal) reasons for this choice, as Peter wished to know everything, which was more than she was willing to give. Thus whilst her identity is subjugated by her husband, This being Mrs Dalloway, not even Clarissa anymore this being Mrs Richard Dalloway, she does not have to share too much of herself, she alone knew. However, it is this choice to be connected superficially to many entirely deeply to none that leaves her feeling far out, out to sea. Thus whilst Clarissas choice allows her to belong to her society, ultimately i t comes at the cost of a deeper personal connection. For some individuals, the demands of being part of a society are too great, as they place higher value upon their integrity than upon being accepted. This is the case with The Crucibles protagonist, John Proctor, as refuses to conform to the corrupt theocracy of Salem. His perspective is emphasised by his ironic comment that he rarely attends Church the core atom of the Puritan society because Reverend Parris hardly ever mentions God anymore. This is a choice which instantly isolates him from the community. Though he initially chooses to avoid turn involved in the witch hunts, once the level of persecution becomes clear he swears to fall like an ocean upon the court. In an attempt to end the bedlam he even confesses his lechery, I have known her, which he knew would instantly isolate him from the townspeople.Though he is by no means an unflawed man, he is depicted by Miller as having a higher moral standard, he is a sinnerbut against his own vision of decent conduct. This is emphasised by his self-deprecation I cannot mount the gibbet like a saint I am not that man, however he eventually comes to understand that his defiance showed courage and integrity and is able to see some shred of goodness in John Proctor. Thus through examining Proctors relationship with his society, one can see that when one rejects their society in favour of their personal values, their connection to others may be weakened, but they will retain a stronger sense of belonging to self. Insert summary of points and conclusion here. Thus, as Fleishman stated, it is the dialectic of individuation and communion that presents the ultimate challenge to belonging.

Cheating and Taking Steroids in Sports

Cheating and Taking Steroids in SportsINTRODUCTIONSports will either be a school of stillice or a school of vice, and thats why the epidemic of beguiler in professional sports is, and ought to be, a huge cultural concern.Sports, at every level, is supposed to be a training ground for virtue, to mould the character of athletes, coaches and supporters so that they may learn less(prenominal)ons that may help them to achieve off-the-field as much as on. In few other venues argon people able to learn as effectively the good habits of perseverance through difficulties, team escape, striving to solely overcome obstacles, the importance of breeding and practice, and the courtesy and class we call good sportsmanship. But the field, court, track, diamond, rink, pool and roadway can also cultivate vice, when results become more than important than virtue, when providening becomes more important than winning fairly. It has been strong to open a sports page newly without reading somethin g to do with bearded darnel and its consequences. Recently encountered readings include Bill Belichick and the clear dispute of the NFLs videotaping policy Patriots Safety Rodney Harrison and his suspension for winning an illegal nerve centers NBA referee Tim Donaghy and his expulsion for betting on games he was officiating Barry Bonds and his tainted home run record, on with former heroes turned synthetic pseudo-supermen Jason Giambi, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Rafael Palmeiro Floyd Landis suspect yellow jersey and the expulsion of what seemed to be half this years Tour de France participants for blood doping and other violations WWE exposure Chris Benoit and his steroid-induced murderous-suicidal rage various college recruiting violations, Olympic scandals and much more. Professional boxing almost looks clean and h geniusst by comparison.WHY DO THEY CHEATSports atomic number 18 a microcosm and stylization of life goal-setting, preparation, effort, character, the integration of mind and body, competition, success and failure. Its all there in sports, distilled and intensified into a few hours experience. The usual answer is that cheaters break so strong a desire to win that they will strive to do so at all costs. Cheaters do have a desire to win, precisely by the time we are adults we know that a cheated victory is hollow. An adult cheater knows that he has non won through skill and effort, and he knows he will not experience the pride that comes from a genuine win. The precisely thing the cheater is left with is that he knows that other people will conceptualise that he won and he will reap the value of their promoted esteem. So heres a hypothesis about the psychology of cheaters Cheating is not motivate by a desire to win, but by urgencying to be thought of by others as having won. Cheating is a kind of social metaphysics-what others comeback is true is more important than what is actually true.Another possibility is that the cheater knows the above-that a cheated win is hollow-but in the short run his intense desire to win crowds out his knowledge. So cheating is a failure to hold the context of why one is playing sports strong desire overwhelms the cheaters knowledge, or through weakness of will the cheater ignores his knowledge to indulge the desire.Cheating in a financial context You cheat not beca rehearse you want the win but beca lend oneself you want the money that comes with the winCheating in a social context You cheat because you dont want your teammates to lose or because you want your teammates to have the win they wantCon-man cheating You cheat just for the pleasure of pulling off a scamCheating that is malevolent You want to see your opponent suffer a loss, so you dont care that the win is hollow-you enjoy astute the other guy is hurting and/or that you deprived him of the experience of winningWHAT ARE STEROIDSSteroids are manufactured testosterone-like medicates that are usually taken to build muscle, e nhance deed, and improve appearance. While some steroids are used health checkly to treat many conditions including asthma, chronic lung disease, skin conditions and allergic reactions such as poison ivy, non medical use of steroids can have serious side effects. Using steroids for cosmetic or athletic purposes is not sanctioned in the United States.Method of implementSwallowed in tablets or liquid or injected. theatrical rolers take them in patterns called cycling, which means they take them over a specific period of time, stop, and then start victorious them once more instead of continuously using them. Many drug users also take different types of steroids in combination with other drugs. This is known as stacking.Signs and Symptoms of Steroid consumptionSteroid abusers often exhibit the following symptomsRapid weight gainRapid muscle developmentAcne flare upFluid retention colour tint in the eyes and on skin (jaundice)Mood swings, depressionAggressive behaviourPremature ba ldingDrug Test Detection verbal steroids can be found in your system up to several weeks after use. Injected steroids can be found for several months after use.Short-term ConsequencesUse of steroids can increase muscle mass, strength, and endurance, but can also cause liver tumors, jaundice, water retention, and high blood pressure. Some users show bad conceit because the drugs make them feel invincible. Other users suffer from uncontrolled aggression and violent behavior called Roid Rage, severe mood swings, manic episodes and depression. They often suffer from paranoid jealousy, natural irritability and can have delusions.Long-Term ConsequencesWhen the body experiences a build up of steroids in its system, conditions such as hypertension, high cholesterol, kidney disease, stunted growth, and heart terms are likely to occur. Women can experience irreversible deepening of the voice, shrinking of the breasts, menstrual ir constantities, baldness and hair growth on other parts of t he body, and venereal swelling. Men can experience baldness, breast enlargement, sterility, shrinking of testicles and impotence. Steroids such as prednisone and other synthetic steroids can cause a rise in blood sugar by blocking the effect of insulin. Over time, users can develop diabetes.WHY TAKING STEROIDS CONSIDERED CHEATINGSteroids give some players an unfair competitive advantage over others. But this response stems from the faulty underlying assumption that players have some innate ability or talent which is not strung-out upon their environment. In fact, the only way steroids are different from other performance enhancers like protein shakes or nutritional supplements is because their side effects are worse and their performance enhancing effects are large. This efficacy, and the steroid body that goes with it, triggers fans pharmaco coherent Calvinism, the belief that taking a pill for any reason is bad, and leads to the media labelling the steroid culture and users as alien, which are the factors that truly keep steroids on the wrong side of exoteric opinion and MLB policy. The first and most basic reason people view steroids as cheating is because they feel it gives players abilities that they otherwise would not have had. This is the position of every poll or article researched for this essay in the study sports media over the last cardinal years. Again, the signs displayed in Philadelphia are representative. One 60-foot long sign said Babe Ruth did it on Hotdogs and Beer. Aaron did it with class. How did you do it?This question rests on the assumption that Bonds steroid use differentiates him from Aaron and Ruth, who set career home run records without steroids. But to simply say steroids enhancers players performance is easy. The deeper question behind that answer is Why does that matter? That question involves a number of different aspects of what it means to be a baseball fan. First among them, perhaps, is the notion of fairness. The US cu lture in general holds fairness as one of its central tenets, as part of the Puritan Work ethic and the capitalist i lay out everyone must deal fairly, so everyone has their shot to succeed if they work hard enough. That ideal is held to as strongly in baseball as any other sport. The problem with steroids, then, is not just that users have an unfair advantage over non-users. Widespread steroid use limits the free choice of non-users, because if they want to make a living they are almost forced to start taking injections, and having to deal with the side effects. This is called free choice under pressure by Thomas Murray (as reported by Peter Kramer).Theres no question, then, that the more players use steroids, the harder it is for others to stay clean. What are the implications of that for players, and what are players responses? At the physical level, this spiral of steroids forces players to endure the side effects of steroids when they otherwise might not. At the level of consc iousness, players have their free choice control by steroid-fuelled competition, and free choice is also something this country values. Players respond to these concerns by claiming that steroid use supports American values. For example, a value much appreciated in sports is the desire to win above all else. Players that have that desire, like Michael Jordan in basketball, are often revered. So a baseball player might argue that he simply wants to win at all cost, even sacrificing his body to steroids to win. Just because another, non-user does not want to win enough to take steroids, that doesnt mean the user should be punished for it.There are other problems with the argument that using steroids is cheating because they give a competitive advantage. The biggest fault with it is that steroids are not the only thing in baseball that gives a competitive advantage when there was none before. Revenue and payroll differences and environmental factors like the skill of the training stav e and the quality of the facilities can cause unfair competitive advantages between teams and players as well, but those discrepancies are believeed part of the game. The responses to this argument are that taking a substance is fundamentally different from working out more or on better facilities because you do not have to work as hard to generate the same results as someone not on steroids. But some players use a good diet to ticktock into better shape, or take legal supplements to make their workouts more effective. This is exactly the way steroids work they help to build muscle faster in conjunction with manage and weightlifting, so those that work out the most are going to get the most out of steroids. Should the MLB disallow all possible supplements and mandate player diet and workout regimens to close out the possible advantage? Ultimately, you cannot justify getting rid of steroids because they give a competitive advantage, because baseball operates by identifying and using competitive advantages.Despite the arguments above, most people would remain convinced that taking steroids was cheating. There are three primary reasonsOne is the notion of pharmacological Calvinism, two is the influence of the press on public perception of steroids, and three is the labelling of drugs in general and those who take them as alien. These are the real reasons that taking steroids in baseball is considered cheating today.Pharmacological Calvinism is the belief that taking a pill or drug is morally wrong, because hard work, suffering and pain are essential parts of human existence. The concept figures prominently in Kramers discussion of Prozac as a way of explaining the publics response to the drug, and the same can be said of fans and baseball players. This phenomenon can be seen in baseball lingo someone who is clean is someone who is off steroids. This terminology might come from the MLB policies, but it probably comes from larger drug culture, and reflects th e idea that even though it is tough to argue against steroids ideologically, there is still a taint to taking steroids, the sense that a player who takes them has lost some purity they might have off steroids. This also might be why players like Jose Canseco are ridiculed and reviled when they talk about steroids being the standard throughout the league they are intentionally taking a stance against pharmacological Calvinism, and so automatically people hearing them want to reject the idea without listening to their analysis, which often is more logical than people care to admit.Another effect of pharmacological Calvinism is that news reporters looking to cover steroids automatically assume a negative stance towards them, although that is also influenced by the dangerous side effects. Sports journalism is very pervasive. Every fan has to get their scores and results from somewhere, often on a daily basis. Sports fans also tend to pass a lot of time discussing sports, so ideas and opinions they read get discussed and argued about in their social circle. The final reason steroids are considered cheating is because they work so well. And because they work so well, and so many ballplayers used them, the build of a user, his problems and habits, became commonly known and looked for. What is more, because of the negative press steroids got, fans were able to label them an other to shake off steroids users as people holding alien values without really looking or considering how they might be motivated by the same things as regular fans. This can be shown by the massive amount of jokes about big heads, small balls, a common side effect of steroid use, and the vehemence of the national polls quoted earlier. For fans to say that anyone testing positive should be thrown out of the sport is quite harsh, considering that there are arrests of ballplayers all the time for a compartmentalization of other drug use charges and crime, and none of them are thrown out on the fi rst offense. Something that might help explain this position is the legitimate use of steroids. Steroids are not like nutritional supplements of protein shakes that people might regularly take to get in shape, and they are not petty crimes or drug charges that baseball fans are familiar with or have committed themselves. They are treatments for sick people to help survive treatment, including treatment of diseases like AIDS, which already is approximately marginalized in mainstream culture. And even in those diseases, steroids are something to avoid if you can. So that makes purposeful steroid users in sports all the more alien.Ultimately, the reason why taking steroids is considered cheating goes back to the chemical properties of steroids themselves they work too well at helping athletes build muscle, and combined with the countrys pharmacological Calvinism, make for bad press and public perception. This leads fans to consider steroids cheating and justify it by saying steroids g ive an unfair competitive advantage, when the entire sport of baseball is built on just such advantages. If steroids were less useful, like nutritional supplements today, they would probably be legal, widely used, and just another part of the game, like spitting sunflower seeds. Unfortunately, because of the pressure on athletes who will do anything to succeed, steroids are only going to get more powerful and hard to detect, rather than more benign and legal. But that doesnt mean the steroid scandal usage go away. Already, journalists are trumpeting this baseball season as the post-steroid era. If history is any indication, people will think steroids solved, stop caring, only to be shocked again when the next great and popular surge of offense turns out to be the result of their beloved players using the next generation of performance enhancers.CONCLUSIONThe modern epidemic of cheating in sports reveals ethical and anthropological dimensions that must be considered if we wish as a culture to eliminate it.The ethical dimensions go farther beyond the violation of a particular rule governing a sports league. It goes to one of the bedrock principles of ethics, whether in sports players, coaches and fans believe that a good end never justifies immoral means. In the cases of cheating above, we see that the cheaters think that the end of winning or doing better in competition validates the dishonest means one takes to get there. There are now such enormous financial rewards or losses hinging on sports outcomes that those of lesser character find far greater incentive. The anthropological dimension refers mainly to the means one takes in violation of the ethical principle. Sports cheating today very often involve technological manipulation not just of the rules of the game like with the Patriots spy gate but also of oneself through performance-enhancing drugs. In former days the path to improvement came through practice, coaching, exercise and experience. Now fo r many it comes through injections, pills and creams. Rather than improving ones skills, one seeks to make himself better, stronger and faster through technology like a modern six gazillion dollar man, or, if you consider the financial incentives for many pro-athletes, a hundred million dollar man. This comes at a huge cost. The death of pro-football player Lyle Alzado and 11 recent professional wrestlers through steroid use is enough of a warning. But we also have to be conscious of the huge temptation it places on all those who, at whatever age, wish to be successful college or professional athletes who cannot compete on their own with artificially-enhanced peers.ReferencesSports and Cheating by Fr.
